The account that tells us to keep all of God’s decrees in the book of Leviticus, warns us that although many have fallen into sinful ways, we must not follow suit, lest we wish to suffer the same consequences.
Leviticus 20:23 states:
“You shall not walk in the customs of the nation which I am casting out before you; for they did all these things, and therefore I was wearied and grieved by them”
In the passage above, God tells the Hebrews that the ways of the nations in which He is casting out are unholy and should not be copied. God punished these people for their sinful customs, and warned the Hebrews that they would meet the same fate if they followed in the same path.
The passage from the book of Leviticus shows that we must not follow what others are doing, especially when we know that it is not right. God grieves sinners, as they are cast out of His presence. No matter how many of them there are, we must not be tempted to join them despite the pressure. It does not matter if they think of us as uptight, “do-gooders”, or “square” –the important thing is that we are being true to our own beliefs and values.
